Football, even more than most sports, requires the adminstrators, managers, players and above all, fans, to switch their brains out, if they have one in the first place, of course. Having said that, I love the game amd have supported a team keenly since 1957 but no-one here will ever know which. No clues. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |

Coincidentally, I too have supported a team since 1957, though less keenly over the last decade or two as my interest in football has gradually declined. The 1957 Cup Final was the first that I watched on TV. Naturally I had to choose which team to support. Since Manchester United's "Busby babes" were the hot favourites, I naturally chose to support the other team, Aston Villa. Villa won 2-0, to ensure that they would be "my team". -- John Hall "[It was] so steep that at intervals the street broke into steps, like a person breaking into giggles or hiccups, and then resumed its sober climb, until it had another fit of steps." Yes, it had an enormous impact. Though I was only nine at the time, I can recall reading the front page story in my father's newspaper. I've talked about this with a friend's father, a very knowledgeable football fan (a Stoke follower, for what it's worth) who said a fair part of their fanbase was post-Munich. And then the 3rd wave of prawn sandwichers in the 1990s. I don't have a leg to stand on, though - I'm a glory-hunter as well, only my current team isn't as lofty as the aforementioned United and is currently doing woefully under the guidance of one of their Premier League legends. I'll let you do the math... Richard |
