2.4 deg C here, continuous moderate to heavy rain has turned to
sleet. Getting pretty dark now, the sort of gloom I remember from years gone by during heavy snow. I have the feeling that it this lot will be heavy snow further inland of my essentially coastal location. I have to decide soon whether to risk a drive to London with a bad back and the risk of problems developing this afternoon on the high parts of the A3. Decisions, decisions! -- Dave Fareham |

Now continuous heavy (wettish) snow - very large flakes. All surfaces now wet and slushy - this could stick soon. -- Dave Fareham W (Locks Heath) |

We're in the sleet phase now, but it was still rain when you first reported sleet... Nick |

You may have just missed out then Nick, it was very marginal here, even in the heavy snow. 6 miles down the road in Lee-on-the-Solent I am told that there is no accumulation; here there is a 100% covering of slush some of it with a thin soft snow topping. Currently the heavy snow has turned to moderate sleet but it hasn't yet shifted the slushy snow cover so if it freezes.... ouch! Temperature +0.3, moderate light to sleet. -- Dave Fareham W (Locks Heath 40m asl) |

Currently light to moderate rain, +0.3deg C, slush has compacted on my wheelie bin, it's hard to stick my finger through it and is either freezing or about to... the rain isn't really shifting the slush not even on the side roads. -- Dave Fareham W (Locks Heath 40m asl) |

At the moment of the solstice (1747 apparently) it was wet and cold. As appropriate as any I guess.... I'd be willing to bet that for a combination of rain and cold, this could, appropriately be enough, one of the wintriest days of the winter in these parts. Nick |

As appropriate as any I guess.... I'd be willing to bet that for a combination of rain and cold, this could, appropriately be enough, one of the wintriest days of the winter in these parts. The rain band moved West late afternoon before returning Eastwards in the late evening - but as rain with just a suspicion of sleet, stopping after midnight. However, the rain has failed to clear the slush from pavements and side roads, which remain treacherous. Two miles E and S of my location, the sleet and snow failed to stick at all, there is no slush. I suspect that even the small difference in elevation (40m) made a difference, and the intensity of the precipitation which seems to have been a bit less just to my East. Midnight to midnight, I recorded 17.4mm of rain, sleet and melted snow (collected in the guage) and most of it will have fallen during the heavy sleet and snow in the afternoon. If it had been one degree colder, I might now have been reporting a snow depth of 6 to 8 inches. Temperature is now falling slowly (+0.5) and the remaining slush will I am sure be frozen by dawn. -- Dave Fareham W (Locks Heath 40m) |
