Just come home from the office - wet in W1 at 15.00 hrs; small amounts
of sleet seen in the rain from the Tube at Stratford, more pronounced snow in the still predominently sleety mix at Newbury Park (Ilford) at 25m asl. Temp on the car thermometer dropped from 1C at N Park to 0C as we climbed to Hainault (70m asl) and sleet turned to snow. Dry snow from Ongar (70m asl) onwards to here at Blackmore (75m asl) . Not a bad case-study on the effects of small changes in altitude on snow (and heat island effects from large urban areas, perhaps?). The former reminded me strongly of the winter climbs from 70 m to 200m, or so from outside Chester-le-St towards Stanley (Co. Durham) 20 and more years ago, up E Stanley bank, athough there the snowline was sometimes a distinct line on the road. - Tom Blackmore, SW Essex. |
