uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

.... (23/0800Z): short light shower of *rain*, freezing on impact:
extensive hoar frost. Ice all untreated surfaces. Current OAT -3.0°C, having been down to -4.1°C overnight. Deep, vigorous convective towers visible to south & east (lit by imminent sunrise). (23/0900Z): another period of freezing rain - all untreated surfaces (and some that had been so), are now covered with ice; worst/best case I've seen since the 1985. OAT currently -1.2°C A338 Bournemouth - Ringwood (a major feeder/connecting road hereabouts) shut in both directions for past couple of hours due multiple accidents over ice. (23/0930Z): not raining currently, but note sferics on latest frames coastal Channel! Still sub-zero temperatures in air (-0.8°C), though the grass min thermometer, though ice-covered, is reading 0.0: presumably some latent heat exchanges in place there. All paths are like glass: they *look* wet, but are in fact highly dangerous. Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |

(23/1130Z): currently light/continuous rain, but whilst out and about, PPN turned moderate, with a very little wet snow embedded. OAT currently: +0.3°C, with grass min. thermo just a tenth above zero. Paths, with the benefit of 'warm' PPN have now begun to sort themselves out: still patches of ice (where previously thick), but broadly, it's just wet/soggy underfoot. Roads seem OK ... one or two minor roads are as the paving - need care, but generally fine. .... (23/1515Z): well, it's all go again: rain off and on from 1330Z,
ocnl moderate, then at 1440Z, isolated 'rumble' of nearby thunder, with another CG strike seen about 5 mins later. This was accompanied by an intensification of the rain (heavy category for a short time), with a couple of bouts of mostly small hail, but I've just had a look at the deposits, and can see a few 5mm diameter. PPN csd now, all surfaces thoroughly wet, with water lying on soil surfaces that are still cold & compacted. Hail particles sparsely scattered. OAT 3.5°C. (23/1610Z): all quiet - at the moment, but some well-developed Cu con making approach towards us; noted that Hurn reported gust to 29 kn on the 15Z ob: we didn't have any such event here, but given the vigour of convection, am not surprised. The hail was mostly opaque, but with a small proportion partially translucent. Mostly melted off now. Rain since 09Z this morning = 10. 6 mm, and I think we've got some more to come. Martin. more to come. .... (indeed we have - 23/1745Z): ISOL TS since 1705Z, still in progress; rain (short-period small hail) from 1650Z: discharge activity seems to be CC, with the immediate past event (1741Z) one of those 'several seconds' extended rumbles trailing away into the distance. Currently moderate rain. OAT: 3.9°C [ quite an exciting day really :-) ] Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |

Moderate rain persists. Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |
