From about 17:45:
Heavy burst of hail, now turned to rain. Several flashes of lightning/peals of thunder, now seems to have moved on. -- Elizabeth |

The freezing rain this morning sounds normal compared to this! Travelled north today , snow cover more or less continuously from Winchester to just north of Birmingham. Deep snow cover, of the sort I've only experienced once since the 80s (travelling through the Basingstoke area last February) from Micheldever area to the Goring Gap. Shame (for snow fans in Hampshire and Berkshire) about the onshore winds, it's that that seems to have made the difference. Nick |

Don't worry about us Nick, an hour after my first post it's still hail and rain alternately, several more thunderclaps and flashes too half an hour ago. All surfaces are covered in a trecherous slushy/hail mix and the air temperature is down tro 1.6 deg C now. It's 1 cm thick now on my wheely bin lid (and I'm not going out in it!) Most unpleasant though, if the truth be told. -- Dave Fareham (W) |

Lasting from 1730Z to 1845Z, the storm delivered copious (and violent) hail, sleet and rain (visibility tumbled to 150 metres at 1745Z). Several blinding lightning flashes and crashes of thunder within 1 mile, some flashes showing a bluish purple tinge. Mainly sheet lightning, which is not surprising given the low Cb base and extremely poor visibility but I saw one CG and one low level CC fork. An incredibly active storm for December with dozens of discharges. We have regained our 2cm covering but this time, mainly of hail. Yet to melt blocks of ice from the rain gauge, it would appear that approx 17mm fell in the 75 minute thunderstorm. Nigel (Romsey, Hampshire) 40m amsl |
