Default Tutorials for absolute beginners (me)

I would like to learn more about the weather, and have followed this
group for the last 3 years or so. The trouble is, when you
knowledgeable people talk about GFS runs and the like, my poor old
head begins to hurt, as I am still a raw beginner.

Without trying to offend anyone here, please could a kind soul point
me in the direction to learn about weather and how I interprete the
links to maps and the like that are sometimes posted?

I have searched around the 'Net many times to try not to ask, but I
have decided that it is now time to ask here where the experts live.
Would anyone be prepared to share knowledge, links, anything, to help
me, a very willing and interested beginner please?

Tony(UK)

Tony, I'd suggest your first port of call is http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/
and in particular http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/140

If you get stuck don't be afraid to ask.

Jon.

.... have a look at this list he-

http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/node/142

and see how you get on. It's difficult I know when you're starting out
with all this 'techie-talk', where to go. The FAQ series, if I'm
honest (as the person who wrote most of it), assumes a certain level
of basic knowledge, but there is stuff in there which might help: the
'Search' facility could also help.

The main FAQ link is:-

http://weatherfaqs.org.uk/

I still get asked questions 'off list' to my email address which I try
and answer as best I can, and can undertake to do so if you prefer ...
the response might be delayed on some occasions though depending upon
my personal circumstances.

Martin.

Also try a basic text book such as Ahrens, C. Donald, Meteorology
Today http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/148695961

It may be too basic but it covers a wide range and at an introductory
level - it is a US text. It has been on the go for a while so there
should be plenty of used copies available or indeed you local
library

Good Luck, Andy

Many thanks, Jon. I never gave it a thought to put uk.sci.weather into
Google. A terrific resource, and I'll be reading the whole site!

.... thanks Stan: it was like another world wasn't it? The current
situation brings back my 'heart in mouth' moments commuting in winter
between St. Albans & Strike. Only had to sleep in the Office once
though.
