The blue moon has a very orange hue right now lol. Blue moon being the 13th full moon of the year I presume? Rather than some nutter running around naked in the snow lol. Interesting co-incidences you also mention with the eclipse, 13th full moon and Hogmanay... I wonder if that takes us back to the start of the little ice age? Good job I'm not superstitious - if that's how you spell it lol :-) Alex. |

Skies are now clearing in South Devon, and the Partial Eclipse of the
Moon is now clearly visible, with the bottom right hand corner of the moon turning a Blueish-grey. Maximum Eclipse is 19:24 UTC (GMT) |

There is an astronomical defintion but it's rather complicated... Blue Moons happen about every 2.5 years and Blue Moons on 31st Dec every 19 years. Make the most of this Blue Moon on the 31st Dec with an eclipse it won't happen for about another 91 years. And I forgot the time missed it... -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |

There is nothing special about a full moon on New Year's Eve, except that it can shed a little light on the festivities. When it occurs, it is of course always going to be the second full moon of the month, as will many full moons falling on the 30th and all those falling on the 31st of any month. Happy coincidence to have an eclipse occuring at a convenient time, unfortunately clouded out in Farnborough. Happy New Year, Roger |
