17 consecutive days with full snow cover in Wishaw Brian, I have a feeling
your deeper snow and more favourable location will see it hang on quite a
bit longer when a thaw gets underway mind you. This is now the longest full
snow cover in this area since January 1979 I believe.
Average air min for the last 11 days here is -7.0șC. 24 days on the trot
with an airfrost. The longest such record I can find locally of run of
airfrosts was 29 days in Feb/March 1986. Seems certain to be broken looking
at forecasts.

First fall of this period up here was on the 14th, couple of days
with no falling snow to the 17th but I don't think any of that which
fell on the 14th thawed on untreated/untrafficed areas over those
days. So that makes 20 days with lying snow...

Average air min for the last 11 days here is -7.0șC. 24 days on the trot
with an airfrost.

Do you mean 24 consequative days sub-zero or just days with sub-zero
temps at some time? We went below zero early on the 17th and every
day since then has had an air frost but not all have been ice days,
only 8 of them have been ice days.

This is becoming quite a winter in Scotland and parts of northern England!
As I said a few days ago this winter is going to be so memorable, even in
the south of England - in a few days time.

Thanks for all your reports, keep 'em comin, I'm envious of your conditions
but my turn will come, it always does.

Not that I want it too Will, but where or when will it end?
With the models running with very cold conditions for at least another 10
days, 4 weeks of lying snow seems a near certainty - I have no idea the last
time that happened in the central lowlands... February 1947 or January 1940
perhaps? And who knows how the second half of January and February could
turn out....
Dare I say it, but it could potentially be the coldest and snowiest winter
here in anyone's lifetime. 78/79 was probably the coldest/snowiest (+0.5șC)
in my lifetime and even with average temperatures from Mid January onwards
this winter will rival it. Currently -0.2șC for December and the first 2
days of January.

And currently 11 inches of snow in the untrampled parts of the back garden.

And your time will come, you know better than most.

;-)

To be honest I don't know. But, ... I do know that a pattern like this
establishing itself at the beginning of January will take some shifting. The
main polar jet is still meandering well south, almost at unprecedented
latitudes. The seas round us are cooling all the time, so if it lasts till
end of January then February is likely to be cold too and then with even
cooler seas it could mean a cold early Spring as well.

That's right even the warmer ensemble members only indicate a return to
normal values and not mild.

Maybe :-)

Thought I'd throw in the numbers for good measure. Hopefully the formatting

It rained heavily on xmas day at several times (it snowed as well) - even
when the temp was considerably below zero... I think the weight of water
compacted the snow rather than there being a real thaw... Consequently
there's a 2 inch layer of ice 4 inches above the grass and 5 inches below
the top of the snow..
Strange, but true.
Alex.
