20 days on the trot with complete snow cover in Wishaw. Quite an
achievement! This might have happened in December 1981 here, locally there's a record showing 24 days of snow lying in December 1981, but at a site over 150ft higher than here. Beyond that, the winter of 1962/63 would be the next candidate. February / March 1947 for sure. With nearly a foot of snow on the ground, and models suggesting the cold continues well into next week, 30 consecutive days is very possible. Today also marked the 27th consecutive day with an air-frost. Trouncing the 29 day local record from Feb/Mar 1986 is all but a foregone conclusion. Beyond that, Feb/Mar 1947 may have had a longer run, but without the numbers I have no idea. Without a rise or change in the wind I'd fancy another sub -10บC minimum tonight here and much lower tomorrow night. The met office forecast -4บC with a rise and change in the wind. Given that they are correct, I'd also forecast heavy snow showers from the North Easterly feed - which they do not. The snow showers are starting to knock on Edinburgh's door as the wind swings slightly mind you, so it'll be a close call. And right on cue a gentle breeze from the NE has awoken here... 1 foot, here we come. Alex. บบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบบ Conditions in Wishaw @ 4:25pm, 5/1/10 Temperature -7.5ฐC. We too have had 20 consecutive days, but there the similarity ends. 19 out of 20 air frosts, missed out on the 30 Dec. Almost lost the snow cover, but just hung on to around 60/70% in the valley before freshened up again New Years eve. Snow not so deep either, max around 16cm, but starting to build again now and could get quite impressive by the end of the week. We did reach -11.5 one evening, but otherwise not as cold as you. Hope it's not causing you any problems, fortunately I live next to a well salted/ploughed road, which is usually only shut for a few hours at a time. David Mitchell. Langtoft. E Riding. |

I'm on a street that tends to be gritted everytime the snow falls (bus route) and there's no nasty inclines - so it's generally not too bad. Save for an hour or two after each fall. Passable with care at worst on several occasions. Almost all side streets in Eastern Lanarkshire have not been so fortunate, and any with significant slopes have not been reachable by car (unless the owner is extremely foolish, or fortunate to have 4WD) since the 14th of Decmeber - we had a freezing rain event here then that's never melted on untreated roads and then the snow covered it on the 17th. The local council have done nothing with these roads in the intervening 3 weeks +. Can you imagine a southerner not being able to move their car for over 3 weeks! Currently -9.0บC air temp. Alike Ken Cook, grass minimum's have been hard to keep track of. But I do know the ground temp has been permanently below zero from the 14th onwards. And was -16บC at 5pm this evening. I'm glad I'm over 5ft tall. Alex. |

The temperature has gone up to -2.1C, with a Force 6 northeaster. Fun. Must do a spot of gardening. I do envy you your -10 though. My lowest is still -9.5C, from March 2001; this cold spell has seen -8.1C on the 23rd, and -6.9C last night. Those of you wanting snow in the south: be careful for what you wish.
