Not even one week of "The Big Freeze" and the gas supplies are being

This is Day 25 fo 100% cover snow and very little thaw. On the 26th Dec it got to 2C, most of the icicles fell off and we lost about 2" of snow. The rest of that time it has only been a tad above freezing for short periods. Only down to -5 or -6C at night until last night with a -9.4C min, not like the Highlands though down to -10 to -15C. -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |

Not even one week of "The Big Freeze" and the gas supplies are being strained. Why am I not surprised? What is occurring on the gas supply system is to be expected under these conditions. Interruptible gas contracts mean that users pay less for their gas but have to switch to an alternative fuel such as oil if requested to do so by National Grid. The number of days this can happen in a supply yearare defined in these contracts. There has also been a temporary partial loss of a supply down the Langeled pipeline into Easington. Such events happen from time to time and this is allowed for in the planning of the gas supply system. The comments by both the energy minister and the opposition spokesman on the subject only underline their lack of understanding of gas supply and demand. Why am I not surprised? -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net I use a couple of UPS's for the PC and equipment they give the mains AC voltage reading and I've never seen it so low as I have the last couple of days around peak time its dropped as low as 228 volts. I normally get a steady 238. Never mind when the Labour Party switch over to green energy those wind turbines and solar panels will keep us warm. |

I would have thought you'd have seen the posts over the last few weeks about cold and or snow in the north though. Of course a few inches of snow isn't much to write home about up here.
