Default The Rise of the car thermometer..

Listening to the radio over this cold spell and especially the last
few days when temps have been the story have you noticed the increase
in temp reporting from viewers/listeners?

This is the result (and increase) of car thermometer (and the text).
What is interesting is the acceptance of accuracy too.

A little fog for us last night kept the lid on a very cold reading.
Min was -13.2 C air.

I am always a bit sceptical of the reading on my car thermometer -
never checked it against a known good temp sensor but seems to read a
couple of degrees C below reports in the area. It dipped to -14 on
Monday morning (about 0630) when the local paper said there was a
record low of -10.7, but then I was up in the hills so could have been
colder spots I guess.

Mine reads 0.5C too low. But it is consistent and very good and very useful.

I know mine (recentish Honda Accord, so you might hope - wrongly -
that it was reasonably accurate) consistently reads 2C high. What's
frustrating is that there seems to be no way of recalibrating the
car's OAT reading. But it's soon to be replaced, probably by a Yeti,
so we'll see how that gets on - hopefully at least the cold temps will
then read more accurately!

My thermometer (VW Touran) reads about 1 to 0.5C too low but i would
be sceptical of it any other time than when moving.

We've been very happy with our 55-reg Octavia estate, and its temp sensor is
always in good agreement with the VP2 when parked near to it.

OT I don't know where the sensor is located on the car, would be
interested to know. We have been thinking of changing to a soft 4x4 (what
with all this weather) but the Yeti doesn't offer DSG with 4x4, which is a
shame. We really like the semi-auto box on the Octavia (diesel).

/OT Cold again this morning ;-)

Renault Scenic sensors are a small plastic pip on the underside of the n/s
mirror. All the ones I've had in recent years have under read by about 1ºC

The CR140 diesel 4x4 Yeti with DSG is rumoured to be starting
production from around May this year.

My thermometer (VW Touran) reads about 1 to 0.5C too low but i would

Of course to give a "reasonable" reading the car has to be moving but I
suspect mine gives an indication of the cold temperatures in the mini-frost
hollow of my sunken, north-facing front garden. At the moment the car is
buried under about a foot of snow so I cannot check.
