Yes, I noticed that some council bigwig was claiming that when
interviewed by the BBC. He looked old enough to remember 1962-3, so
should have known better.

Yes - I muttered under my breath "You mean rare, not unprecedented -
just say rare.".

Everyone wants to blame someone, because it's harder than normal to get
about. People should just HTFU and deal with it. It's not anyone's fault
- sometimes **** happens.

And we all get to find out the awful truth one day!

Something to look forward to.

However, there is a slim chance that it may well be turn out to be
unprecidented around here anyway... If the rest of the winter has an average
temperature of +1.0ºC or lower it will be the coldest, in this area at
least, since the 19th Century.

Pedant that I am, I can't resist pointing out that if it's happened
before, even if it was over a hundred years ago, it's still not
unprecedented.

Well, I'm sure it was pretty cold durning some of those ice ages, it may
have happened more than a billion times before to be ultra pedantic.

Precisely the term needs a qualifier. Unprecidented in the last 10
years, 50 years, since records began the otherwise it is meaningless
journalistic hype.

Yes "unprecedented" is a bit OTT, though there is the chance that it
could be the coldest since 1979, which is quite a while back. Or it
could just be the coldest since 1985 or 1987, or even, if late January/
February are very mild, only 1995/96. We'll see I guess...
