But I think I'd prefer it before the 's' rather than after, on the
basis that individual suckers are sucked in individually ... though
I understand the alternative argument.

Suckers' Gap: that period when snow lovers think that the cold weather
will return in the near future, before eventually realising that it
won't.

I was trying to think of years that had a notable "suckers' gap" in the
sense that Will has used it. The gap between the January and February
cold spells in 1985 came to mind, as well as that in 1981-2.

Of course, in the south we've already had one suckers' gap this winter,
around and just after Christmas.

I which case I've to wait until Wednesday, February 3, for the chance
of an ice day and a week of renewed cold. Or maybe Monday, January
25th. I think it will be the former...

Of course, almost as soon as I posted that the 12Z GFS operational run
came out, and it's enthusiastic about restoring an easterly - at first
tentatively but then in full force from about eight days out.

Always possible John, but with that degree of outlier, I'd put the
odds on that particular 10-day easterly occurring, bringing that level
of cold, at more than 15/1 against. Good odds?

It's always possible that the run has picked up some change in advance
of the other ensemble members. But there's no support from the 12Z ECM
at all, either in the operational run or ensemble members. At the
moment, 15-1 sounds about right. If there's anything in it, then
although it may be some time before it becomes the majority solution we
should start to see more hints of it in the 18Z and 00Z runs.
