I've been surprised how cold it has stayed today here in
Southend-on-Sea. Most of the day has been dull with continuous light snow, nothing settling. Most of the day the temp sat around 0.7°C, but now this evening there seems to be breaks in the cloud and has dropped back to: 17:50 Temp -0.1°C, DP -1.9C Wind ESE 1mph 1000.8mb steady. -- Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net e-mail: kreh at southendweather dot net |

Seems to have stopped now. Maximum temperature +0.4º at 1310 but soon fell back below freezing in the heavier snow and is now at -0.5º Hardly a breath of wind - unless the anemometer has frozen up again. This is so 1963 One aspect of 1963 was that thaws were forecast more than once, if my memory is correct, but did not materialise. It will be interesting to see what happens this time around given the advances in forecasting accuracy over the last 45 years. Alan Gardiner Chiswell Green, St Albans 101m ASL |

Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. All the prolonged cold winters of my lifetime (i.e both Jan and Feb cold) tend to lead to poor summers - 1979, 1985, 1987. That's why, despite me willing this promised cold to return next week, I'm kind-of half-hoping February will be a bit milder. Plus, when the sun starts setting after 5, you can actually enjoy the mild weather - it feels like spring rather than November. Nick |

Assuming that you were in England at the time, I think your memory is probably at fault. Having said which, the summer of 1963 was no worse than many other summers in the 1960s. -- John Hall "Acting is merely the art of keeping a large group of people from coughing." Yes, I was in England (Kent) and I don't think my memory is at fault. It was a very eventful year for me and I have clear memories of the summer. |

Mean temperature 14.8°C. It wasn't dreadful like 1954 and 1956 but certainly not very good. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |
