Is this suckers gap on now until the end of Feb???
Only joking!!

That massive high to the east is looking like it's on it's way out as far as
the UK is concerned, or am I missing something??

Has Suckers Gap now become so well established that it deserves its own
entry in the FAQ - alongside the Bartlett High ?

Ah but when does a gap last so long that its no longer a gap. How about
milder spell.

The expression has a long and distinguished history ... we used
to use it in the early days of oil-industry forecasting in the North
Sea in the 1970s, and I am sure that venerable aviation
forecasters will easily be able to predate that.

Trouble is, it can mean different things.

I usually think of the 'suckers gap' as being that sudden clearance
to sunny conditions behind an active cold front, beforethe blustery
showers pack in.

So what exactly does it mean and what determines the period?

Given it's still cold today, I guess it's not started yet.
I hope Will is right though, it's too early to go mild.

12Z ECMWF just out. That does still look cold, generally, though wet
at times in the south with deep lows occasionally moving up the
channel.

The ECM 12Z is just out. The operational run still just about brings in
an easterly next week, but it looks a rather marginal affair. One
interesting feature is that it brings two lows along the Channel, or
thereabouts, one on Friday 22nd and the other on Sunday, 24th. That's
something new, I think. I suspect that temperatures might be as bit high
for snow, though so far I've only seen the pressure charts. And of
course 8 and 10 days out is a bit far to be confident that those lows
will actually happen.
