Default Weather pictures from America

Some of you might be interested in some of my pictures from my adventure
across America this summer:

Developing cumulonimbus in southern Idaho, caused by lifting by the
surrounding mountains:

http://www.jstott.me.uk/usa2003week2/155.htm
Earlier that day we passed a range of mountains with some very nice
cumulus congestus clouds forming above. We were lucky to miss pretty
much all the thunderstorms that passed around us; it was certainly one
of the most spectacular displays of lightning that I've seen before.

Same night; my very first lightning pictures (southern Idaho, looking
south towards Nevada):

http://www.jstott.me.uk/usa2003week2/161.htm
Didn't have a tripod for these so had to use a rather rickety fence,
hence the shaking! Sod's Law that all the strikes happened at the edge
of each picture; not a single one in the middle of the frame!

Sunset over Lake Tahoe, Nevada:

The second photo has the moon visible at the same time.

Mist in Yosemite Valley, California:

The tallest thermometer in the world, Baker, California - gateway to
Death Valley (reading 101°F/38.3°C):
http://www.jstott.me.uk/usa2003week4/235.htm
The thermometer is 136ft tall representing the maximum temperature ever
recorded there of 136°F/57.8°C. It got to about 105°F/40.5°C while we
were in Las Vegas.

Crepuscular rays near Lake Powell:
http://www.jstott.me.uk/usa2003week4/271.htm

Thunderstorm at the Grand Canyon (we were in a helicopter at this point!):

Sunrise at the Grand Canyon:

The second picture is probably the best; the third shows the rainbow
that happened at the same time (in the west, obviously).

Manhattan skyline shrouded in low cloud:

What camera etc, were you using?

Nikon Coolpix 5700. I had a UV filter attached all the time but owing to
being totally disorganised forgot to take any other filters which would
have been useful on a few occasions. The 1Gb Microdrive I used was just
big enough (I think about 700 photos taken in total during 6 weeks); I
bought a spare CF card from WalMart just in case. A tripod would have
been really useful but I was travelling light and there wasn't quite
enough room

The camera worked quite well most of the time but the zoom was a bit
sticky when it was really hot; the camera's not rated above 40°C/10000ft
I think, both of which I got very close to (the pass into Yosemite is
9945ft ASL). Also worked in the 100% humidity in New York (eugh!). Also
didn't mind the odd shower, especially at Niagara Falls!

Main problem was batteries - we were camping a lot of the time so ended
up with a total of 4 batteries (nasty, expensive, proprietary ones) to
last the time. Again, if I'd have been organised I would have got hold
of an adapter to charge the batteries from the cigarette lighter in the bus.
