Default Model verification

Work in progress, but the wizards at Weatheronline have been
attempting to create some verification output for me - follow the link
below:

http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-b...&WMO=&ZO OM=0

This shows recent GFS model output verifying at the current time. It
needs tweaking, but you can see similar for the other models.
Eventually I'm hoping they'll have a standard set of output for each
of the models so that people can see when each of the models finally
"came into line" with the existing analysis. This actually might help
people with a desire to verify the strength/weaknesses of the models.

Another link that got swamped in another thread was a "poor man's
ensemble" of all their available charts which again should be useful
for those wanting all the models at the same forecast lead time (e.g. T
+144) in the same place, along with the CMC and GFS ensemble means:

http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-b...&ARCHIV=0&WMO=

.... many thanks for letting us know Richard (and for earlier posts).

That entire area of the WeatherOnline site is turning into a cracking
resource - please pass our thanks back to them for the work done.

Martin.

Excellent stuff, Richard. It saves a lot of flicking backwards and forwards.

It is indeed a superb resource. On a single user-friendly site there's far more
information available than we could ever have dreamed possible a decade ago.
Incidentally, the T+120 to T+144 NOGAPS charts on the site based on the 00z run
should have a few people on here foaming at the mouth :-)

Thanks from me too Richard. It is so interesting to play with this and
see the past positioning of that Siberian High (for example) on the
various models.

Weatheronline have stepped ahead of some other free providers with
this, It's the kind of thing (amongst others) that I feel our UKMO
should provide free. After all, we do pay for that.

Keep this up and I may provide you with fresh red meat! *))

And whether there is any advantage at looking at model output six
hourly or just once a day for forecasts beyond 6 days?
For example, comparing the analysed six hourly charts at 10 days with
model output six hourly, and then comparing model output for say 00Z
with analysed chart at 00Z.
Not that I want to take away the enjoyment of those who like to look
at model output beyond a week at six hourly intervals.
They must get their fix. It's a relatively innocent fetish. :-)

Well, you know my views on that one Len. If I didn't watch the 6-
hourly gfs and compare that to the ECM and finally check with the
ensembles, how would I spot when the models are telling the truth with
the reasonable degree of accuracy that I've been able to maintain?

It is also a rather innocent XXfetishXX hobby; as you say! *))
