I would imagine some places managed one last year?
Here in Wishaw we have to turn the clock back 14 years to the 6th Feb, 1996. Even during February 1986 we only managed it once. Though February 1985 managed it three days on the trot. It really is a rare feat here, much more so than in December or January. I'm not sure the coming week or two will change that? Despite all the snow we had here last February the 09-09 temperatures always managed to creep above freezing as less cold air became entrained in the circulation from time to time. -- George in Epping, West Essex (107m asl) www.eppingweather.co.uk www.winter1947.co.uk COL 36055 |

Hi, Alex 3rd Feb last year Copley, before that 2006 before that 2003, then 2001, 1999, 1996 etc etc I'm amazed at your February 1986 figure. From my record I estimate at least 15 from my previous site 100 metres lower (6 there). Mean max was 0.9C so I estimate -0.1C or lower here. Some areas were below 0C for the whole of February 1986 locally. I estimate the absolute max here was around 1C on the 28th Best wishes, Ken Copley, Teesdale |

Similar here last year, the maximum on the 5th Feb 2009 was only 1.2บC, we lowered that mark further just 2 days ago when the maximum was 1.1บC. This is the closest we've came in the intervening 14 years since the February ice day. Alex. |

Even November 2008 managed one. But the February wait continues for now. |

The mean maximum for the month was +2.1บC and the absoloute maximum was +4.7บC (on the 18th). Even in February 1978, when there was a run of extremely low minimum's around here, including the February record (-20.1บC), there was only one ice day. Alex. |

Ken In a semi valley within the general Clyde valley Ken, can be both a bit of a heat trap and a frost pocket, especially with lying snow. I guess during the day we're more likely to be influenced by air from the coasts too - both east and west coasts are less than 50 miles away with not particularly high ground in between (central lowlands). But at night we can be detatched from both. Slightly further up the valley, and 10 miles to my south east, the village of Carstairs holds quite a few UK cold records over the years. Alex |
