This winter (DJF) looks as though it will be the coldest and snowiest
winter in Shetland since 1978/79. The number of air frosts on Fair Isle so far this winter (25 to date) is the highest since records began here in 1974. I wonder if there are any similarities between this winter and that of 1978/79. The summer 1979 was one of the worst 'in living memory' - very cold and wet. In fact, here in Shetland, 1979 was a complete contrast to all the years 1n a period covering the 1970s and early 1980s. Relatively dry, with reasonably warm summers but cold winters.
