Laptop?

Anyone with any sense in remote rural areas has alternative power
sources anyway.

Power went off at 2 am and has just been put back on at 5pm. 12 inches
of high water content snow has snapped lots of branches, broken my
phone line (pulled exterior holding off roof) and naturally downed

village, as usual the village plough heaped 5 foot drifts at the
entrance to out property!

Lots of abandoned cars on the road to Aberfeldy, quite a hairy drive
in.

Now exhausted. Lost a days work and money and missed a good auction.
reports of 24" of snow at Auchterarder.

I'm in Perth. No snow at all here.

Really?
That's a massive difference over not so vast a distance.
And I do know the area, my Grandparents used to live in
Comrie. I wonder how much snow is there...

Nonsense.
Google allows you to remove any of your own posts if it was placed on
Usenet via their servers. It's in the options panel of the owner's
post.

So you can delete an individual post. Can you prevent them from
archiving all your posts by any simple means? Other than
periodically searching for your own old posts and deleting them
one by one. Is there an option to do that?

I'm not being funny. I genuinely don't know.

Since Google is the one Usenet server that actually stores data over a
considerable period, the insult to its ideals is pretty poor
judgement.

Hardly an insult. For someone so thick skinned, I'm surprised
you thought it so.

Google, afaik, do not run a usenet server. Don't think deja.com
did either.

Or were you referring to the also-rans who may not have the same
privilege if they want Google to drop them from their archive?

I'm not thick skinned, just so self obsessed I seem impervious to
those beneath me. Get over it.

Why would anyone want to remove a post from Usenet?

You can remove any post you put in via Google. If you cross post it
needs to be done for each group posted. As far as I know you can only
remove individual posts.

But there is a facility in their headers to find them all. Once the
search opens, you can sort through them by relevance or by date.

I use my Hotmail and Gmail account with them so I would have to search
both accounts. There is a method for linking them if you use the
accounts on the same computer or have shared the cookies somehow.

I'm not sure that it is a good idea having Google so ubiquitous in
one's on-line life. So far, I'd trust them more than I would the
British Secret Service, the Health Service and the Government.

But that's not saying much. I used to trust Banks, TV companies and
the Met Office too, so how gullible am I?

how do you do that non archiving thing? I can't seem to find where I
have the option

Become a proper usenetter and get yourself a decent feed and
client.
Google groups will never let you have the option to prevent
google from archiving your post.

I thought you could simply type *X-no archive: yes *at the top of your post,
if your newsreader didn't have the option?
