After a 40 hour sabatical, the snow is now greater in the mix than rain
again, but with surfaces so sodden around here I wouldn't expect anything to stick to the ground today. Over 55mm of precipitation recorded here since Tuesday night, it's probably just as well the rain set in on Wednesday evening as I'm not sure the populated areas of the central lowlands would handle over 2 feet of snow at all well in this day and age. Higher parts of Lanarkshire and West Lothian far exceeded the maximum depth of 14cm at this site. 18 inches in the village of Douglas was the greatest depth I've heard of locally over the last 2 days. I'm about to call my sister to get the latest on how things are in Lochaber and will probably make a seperate post to keep those interested abreast of the situation - if you'll pardon the pun. The whole of South Devon has been drying out and experiencing a really springlike day. I do hope and I'm sure your sister will be fine, but to read about people cut off by snow on a day like today is surreal when you are this side of the weather divide! Mind you, your post jogged a memory: "Lochaber No More" on Vinyl; The Boys of the Lough; Dick Gaughan and Aly Bain. Marvellous! |

Alex, I thought that a sabbatical represented one year break in seven years, but I suppose your snow event this winter has seemed like a lifetime! Here in Dundee, after an attempt at snow and rain at the start of the current event beginning a couple of days ago, that led briefly to a little bit of slush lying for a short while (but now long gone), I have since then seen temps consistently hovering around 2 - 3 C with plenty of rain occasionally mixed in with a bit of sleet over this period. Currently, 2.3C reported by my garden cheapo wireless weather station. Must be the influence of the wind coming off the North Sea and not cold enough for full-blown snow in the coastal margins, Geoff. |

You learn something new everyday! The weather hasn't been so different here from yours since Wednesday evening. Although it's colder this evening at +0.7บC .The wind is pretty much from the N/NNE now, so there's no coastal influence at all. Light snow flurries, but no chance of it lying tonight unless the ground freezes. Alex |
