I don't think I can ever remember such a combination of all-day
sunshine (literally) and such low temperatures in March in the south
of England (Hampshire) before. This really is a very unusual spell of
weather. The strength of the sun suggested something almost
approaching summer, the temperature suggested we were still in
January. Completely bizarre...

Indeed and it continues. I have a friend just a few miles inland of the
North Nofolk coast and I notice at 9.30pm the temp is -3.1C and DP -6.0C

I was thinking that whilst out walking Nick. You really could not feel the
sun at all due to the significant well below freezing wind chill.

Agreed. Listening to the radio this afternoon (forget who). He said
something like "What a beautiful Spring afternoon". He was obviously
looking out the window and had not been outside :-)

3 months now with no temperatures in double figures - last was Dec 6th -
11.3°C (N E Lincs) :-(

Spent most of yesterday in London and walking around I don't think
I've felt so cold all winter. I think it's going to be quite a while
yet before the T-shirts while be coming out the cupboard.

The driest and coldest air has already passed you in Norfolk. At 1900Z my
dewpoint sensor showed -9C with the air temperature just above freezing. I
didn't believe this and looked on XC weather to confirm. An area from about
Oxford south west to Bournemouth and south-east to Brighton was reporting
similar conditions.

Something seems to be generating these pulses of unusually low dewpoint air
over Central Southern England as this is not the first time this winter I
have seen similar pools on the XC weather charts. As Dave says, these
conditions are really unusual compared with recent late Winters / Springs
and the onset of spring flowers / opening of buds is being seriously delayed
compared with what we have been accustomed to.

Well to add my tripe contribution: I went out to do some gardening work and
like many observations here, the strength of the sun light belied the oh so
cold air. I lit a fire as its been dry of late and cut back some ivy which
although pretty is rapidly shortening the life expectancy of my rear fence,
oh boy did my hands get cold.

I cant help feeling that all the present rules and parameters we use to
judge climate and weather are not really good enough. the only reliable data
set of temps we can rely on the satellite record shows , incredible warming
globally yet the NH winter on land seems like a parallel universe.

We are in a time of very newly learnt climate knowledge IMHO

Worraloada********.

It wasn't that windy. It wasn't warm is what.

An anticyclone in February is cold despite the exceptionally good
insolation.

Mind you my sedums on a north facing wall are budding ready for
flowering at their usual time - I think they must go by daylight hours
rather than temp.
