Default Today's model interpretation (12/03/10)

Here is a summary of the NWP output for noon on Tuesday.
Issued 0519, 12th March 2010

Much of England and Wales will see settled conditions for the latter half of
the working week, with high pressure to the SE. Further north it'll be
cloudier with a greater risk of rain. For the weekend it currently looks as
though the jet will head southwards again, bringing a trough and rain across
England and Wales with colder easterlies to the north.

Analysis and evolution to T+120 via GFS
NW'lies cover the UK, with high pressure to the west. There are further
NW'lies tomorrow, followed by WNW'lies on Sunday. Monday sees further
WNW'lies.

The jetstream chart shows a weak and split jet over the North Atlantic. At
the 500hPa level there are southerlies with a ridge to the east. ECM has an
upper ridge over the UK and MetO brings a ridge to the east with southerlies
aloft. GEM has NW'lies aloft due to a ridge to the west, while JMA has a
ridge over the UK.
At the surface, GFS brings SE'lies with a low to the SW and a high to the
east. ECM has SSE'lies and southerlies for all areas except Scotland, which
lies under SW'lies. ECM has a ridge to the, with southerlies and SSW'lies as
a result. MetO brings SE'lies, with a trough to the west. GEM shows a ridge
over all areas except Scotland, which lies under moderate WNW'lies. JMA has
southerlies and a ridge to the east.

Evolution to T+168
ECM shows a trough over Scotland and Northern Ireland on day 6, with SW'lies
elsewhere. There's little change on day 7.
GFS brings a ridge for England and Wales on day 6 with southerlies
elsewhere. On day 7 southerlies affect many areas, with the exception being
Scotland which lies under a col.

Looking further afield
ECM shows a trough over England and Wales on days 8 and 9, leading to
easterlies elsewhere. On day 10 low pressure lies to the south with NE'lies
across the UK.
GFS also has a trough over the south on day 8, with ESE'lies elsewhere. The
trough fills and moves northwards on day 9, with southerlies and SW'lies
spreading over the UK. On day 10 winds become SSE'lies with a low to the
west.
