Default Radiosonde question

Anyone here ever found a radiosonde, by any chance?

Not found one myself but when I was in HM Coastguard we often had them
handed in by fishermen when they had picked them up at sea.
At one time there used to be five shillings reward if they were returned to
Bracknell but I fear those days are long gone :-(

Yes, twice. One fell onto a school building in E. London and the other onto
a school playing field in north-west Essex. Both had small brown labels to
say that that there was no need (or reward) to return them.

How would you find one with anything but?

One fell onto a school building in E. London and the other onto
a school playing field *in north-west Essex. Both had small brown labels to
say that that there was no need (or reward) to return them.

So a miniature radio, altimeter and temperature gauge are worthless?

So a miniature radio, altimeter and temperature gauge are worthless?

The ones I used to help launch at Crawley used thermionic valves!

The one we found in Kingsdown wood on the East Kent coast in the late
seventies used thermionic valves, and a little one-use-only lead acid
battery or two to provide LT and HT. It had a note on it which I think
said that tampering with the battery was a really bad idea, it was an
obsolete design, and would be please dispose of it. It had been launched
from near Gravesend.

Needless to say, once the battery was rendered non corrosive, disposing
of the thing wasn't exactly at the forefront of our minds.

Several years later, the one we found in the Thames was transistorised,
but drowned ...

Yes, I found one in the woods near Henley-on-Thames many years ago -
took it home and opened it up. It had a small lead-acid battery which I
promptly recharged using the car battery charger. I got the large
rotary switch inside to work again, but I don't know if it transmitted
any data, as I didn't know the right frequency. Probably broke some law
along the way! I didn't see any thermionic valves on the circuit board
so it must have been transistorized. A small notice on it said there
was no reward for its return so I finally tossed it.

Bye
