uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Just for the world to know, when I am rich and famous....
dead and famous I mean... Yesterday's largest magnitude quake was the brief change in the weather we had here yesterday. It was a little wet in Britain. (Not so's you'd notice anything that special but the fact was remarked upon in various sectors.) (It sometimes amazes me what turns some people on. And to think I think I don't have a life. Feck! Sad *******s.) 6.2 M. 2010/03/20. 14:01. 03.4 South. 152.2 East. NEW IRELAND REGION, PAPUA How do I know? Let's not get scientific here. What's good for the CRUx is good for the cook. All you need to remember is that you heard it here first folks. (I seem to remember you heard it here before, too, neither.) You can stick your carbon dioxide in the sea where it belongs. Suck this one. |

New things learned: Some phases bring in weather spells that in the North Atlantic, develop elongations in the pressure vortices called Highs and Lows. Elongations tend to develop into ridges and troughs. But on occasions like this, the Lows split up into separate systems. Ordinarily this sort of thing does not occur until they reach land. At sea they tend to gather and deepen at certain geographical points such as when they reach the Mid Atlantic Ridge. In certain ocean cycles, the pressure has to wait until enough acoustic waves coincide at the right place to drop the pressure about 10 millibars. When that happens, the Low can cross the Ridge and head for its destruction on the shores of Norway or Scotland. When that happens a suitable earthquake occurs somewhere or other on the planet. The magnitude of the quake being directly related to the power of the storm. But this phase, not. And of course all the charts I collected during it -courtesy of the Met Office are useless. Not to worry, the Germans have a cunning plan. Go to WetterZentrale and get the latest output with no hassle: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsfaxsem.html From the Brown box; Select: Fax From the Green box; Select: Bracknell From the Grey box; Select: Analyse 0/6 Don't mention the war. |

The magnitude of the quake being directly related to the power of the storm. So the relationship of the weather with earthquakes is not so much that the weather hits a "continental" shelf, so much as the system itself devolves. I really have to learn to stop thinking of it all in terms of simple fluid dynamics. It's a continuum of another dimension entirely. And it's not as if I didn't know that. A tropical storm hitting shallows, signalled this to me ages ago. I just couldn't see it in the Atlantic. Just too lazy to think. Maybe I should Col myself a little less sky wise. And a lot less worldly wise. Some people have all of the fun Know all there is under the sun. They don't like to waste much time The Good Old Stuff suits them just fine Some know nothing and prefer to be left alone But the Thaumaturge is a rolling stone Ah, the Thaumaturge... He's a rolling stone Some have games they like to play Keeping rules the Good Old Way Strange attractions newly found Their pride and passion kicked around It tears them apart It can't be true But a Thaumaturge can break their hearts And that is what I do The Weatherlawyer Will do these things to you He peers in waters that run deep And ****es on those who run and weep New things learned are here to stay Because what is true won't fade away And what is true Can never fade away And what is true Can never fade away |

That's what W *thinks* could be a list for the day. W is trying to convince you that "a few relatively minor quakes slip off the radar" and that this list he's produced are some kind of data that he can work with, quoting a few quakes as weak as 2.5 on the Richter scale to back his theories and it's about here where it all gets a bit silly and needs comment. I usually leave W alone these days, but his ramblings get annoying when he tries to convince people that he's working with decent data. W; have you any idea of how many earthquakes there are of between 2 and 4 on the Richter scale worldwide*? You should do, as I've pointed it out to you before. Read this and think again before you produce a list for the day and include quakes as weak as 2.5 in your list. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/faq...ID=11&faqID=69 *It's over a *million* W.
