Quite amazed to see that Heathrow, Charlwood and Northolt reached the
dizzy heights of 27.9°C (82°f) while at Southend-on-Sea I struggled to reach 19.8°C (20°C at Airport, 18.4°C at 03693 Shoeburyness). Brilliant wall to wall sunshine and crystal clear skies. Heaven. I'm sure many have been much cooler along the east coast. Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" |

Just about perfect for my taste. Len Wood Wembury, SW Devon, 83m asl |

Just about perfect for my taste. Len Wood Wembury, SW Devon, 83m asl Hi Ron, Always nice here in the summer with an easterly component to the synoptic wind. This looks likely to return later next week after a less settled spell on Monday and Tuesday. Depending on the strength and direction of the synoptic wind, the sea breeze on a sunny day arrives around 1200 BST. This means temperatures remain about 3C below those inland, and it is a good deal cooler than the 'continental' southeast. Much sunnier here than inland as convection develops over Dartmoor. The only downside is just occasionally sea fog, in light wind conditions, is brought onto the coast by the sea breeze. This does not penetrate inland more than a mile so is not such a problem compared with the flatter east coast. Welcome to the Southwest where the climate is very permissive! Len Wood Wembury .. |

Keith (Southend)http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" Yes Keith. Drove home from York early evening with car temp 25 at York and 17 by the time I got here. Max 19.3 after 3.1 last night and a ground frost, but probably 17 on the coast. Now raining, unheard of here, we've missed everything for weeks. David Mitchell. Langtoft. East Riding. |

Keith (Southend) http://www.southendweather.net "Weather Home & Abroad" The difference between the coast and inland also affected the South forecast on BBC Breakfast yesterday. On the 4-day outlook panel, the temperature for Saturday was shown as 21C but Reham Khan said it would be warmer inland and on the next broadcast she'd altered it to 25C. Presumably, the automatic value for the panel is taken from the Southampton F/C? -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks., UK. E-mail: newsman AT scarlet HYPHEN jade DOT com |

E-mail: newsman AT scarlet HYPHEN jade DOT com The forecasts always seem to allow for sea breezes on Scilly, when they barely exist as the Islands are too small. So the forecast for yesterday (given the prior evening) was 14C (the surrounding SST is 13-14C, the SST in the calm pool between the Islands is now 16C.) It actually reached around near 19C at the hill top airport, 21C on St. Martin's. During an early Summer warm spell Scilly is often the coolest place in the SW when there is a moderate/fresh gradient wind (as Thurs) but it's very different in still conditions like yesterday. The forecasts (local TV as well as the 5 day computer generated rubbish) never seem to take this into account. Graham Penzance Graham Penzance |
