An historical perspective on the climate statistics
for Coventry during June 2010 Temperature With a monthly mean temperature of 16.0C, this has been the warmest June in Coventry since 2006 (17.0C), which was of course the warmest June in Central England since 1826. Although rather cool mid-month, only 9 June months have been warmer in Coventry than 2010 in the past seventy years (1940, 1950, 1960, 1976, 1982, 1992, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. June 2010 has been 1.5C warmer than the city’s 30-year average temperature, though the first six months of 2010 still averaged 0.2C below normal. Rainfall ..June 2010 (49.2mm) has been drier than 2009 (51.6mm) but wetter than 2008 (37.2mm). Even so, only four June months have been drier than 2010 in Coventry since 1996 (2000, 2002, 2006, 2008). The Met Office have reported that the first six months of 2010 has been the driest first half of the year since 1929 in north-west England. Here in Coventry however, it has been wetter this year (282.8mm) than last year (262.7mm) in this period! In fact we have had 18 wetter first six months of the year in Coventry since 1929, so certainly no such record here! Sunshine This has been the sunniest June (247.8hr) in Coventry since 1996 (268.6hr), and the sunniest month at any time of the year since July 2006 (275.3hr). Days of interest during June 2010 included: • 8th The wettest day of the month (16.2mm) was the wettest June day in Coventry since 2007 (69.9mm). • 22nd This was the sunniest day (15.0hr) of any month in the city since June 1997 (15.5hr). |

I saw a forecast where the statement was simply that it was the driest 1st 6 months since 1929 - with no region specified. In my records (start 1991) 1992, 1997, 2005 & 2008 were all drier. It's currently pouring, looks like we'll easily exceed 20mm under this front welcome rain mind you. Graham Penzance |

Graham Penzance Just checked, 19.4mm so far and a lot more to come in the next few hours, so we are likely to exceed 30mm down here. Graham |
