Default The July curse strikes again...

Been away for 10 days in a rather too hot and humid Spain, but from
the reports here sounds preferable to what we've been getting this
week - sounds like a repeat of the same old cyclonic stuff which
dominated 2009 and 2007, and 2008 to some degree also. Worse, I come
back to an overcast day and a forecast of what looks like more of the
same this week! Four poor Julys in a row?

Seems that the Julys of the nineties were an aberration and that those
of the mid to late 80s and now are more typical. Maybe it's time to
knock July on the head as a holiday month and have the main holidays
in the more reliable, and arguably much prettier, June as well.

What a depressing ol' post that was Nick! Maybe you've got the post-holiday
blues.

This July, and summer so far has been the best since 2006, by a long, long
margin. Last week we had much needed rain after things were getting pretty
desperate, and now the sun is out (as it was yesterday), it's feeling warm
again in the humid air with the temperature now past 23°C, and just a
pleasant sea breeze blowing. Perfect!

Averages and total's so far for this July (1st - 17th) with 2009 (again,
1st - 17th first brackets, then for the whole month in 2nd brackets):
Mean min: 13.1°C (13.3°C), (12.7°C)
Mean max 23.0°C (20.8°C), (20.0°C)
Mean: 18.1°C (17.0°C), (16.4°C)
Rain 33.7 mm (94 mm), (143 mm)
Sun 119 hours (81 hours), (147 hours)

The 2nd half of July 2009 was particularly miserable. This July (and summer)
has a totally different feel about it. Only one day this month with a
temperature 20°C, only 3 days this summer so far with temp 20°C.

(13:15), 23.1°C, RH 59%, DP 15.5°C, 1024 hPa (S), Wind 6 mph SSE.

July seems OK to me too, certainly not June's sunshine, but not at all
bad. Friday was nice day, yesterday saw a beautifully sunny afternoon.
This morning I was lucky enough to go for a swim during a 2 hour sunny
spell (which show up nicely on http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/satpics/latest_uk_vis.html
11:00 image) Even last Thursday, plenty of sunshine & spectacular sea
- before the rain & a bit of a blow arrived during the afternoon.
http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/picsPL.html

We have already had our normal July rainfall, but approx 90% fell in
2 dollops, the most being 27mm on 1st. Temperatures so far just
marginally above the July norm.

July has been very wet in western Scotland - shame we have no reports
from that area any more

Not as nice as June, but not deradful in Dawlish. Plenty of sunny
weather, but no extended dry and warm spells. Much more changeable
than June, with a day of gales, but I don't recognise your summer, or
your July, Nick!

I think there has been quite a North / South split, the further SE the
dryer, sunnier and warmer it's been, although not wall to wall
sunshine. This week looks similar to last week, but not as bad, then
it looks like wall to wall sunshine for a couple of weeks, well,
certainly down south.

Yes, probably I have to admit :-) When I wrote that, due to flight
delays I'd been severely suffering from lack of sleep.
The afternoon was much nicer anyway, though habituation to the Spanish
heat was in evidence as I was shivering in an apparent temperature of
around 20C around 1900, in what would normally seem a warmish summer
evening.

Incidentally, the front which produced all that rain and wind here
last week, I guess, was active enough even down in Spain (Ribes,
Catalonia) to produce an effect: Thursday dawned completely overcast
with light rain, and it didn't clear until around midday. Apparently
very unusual down there.

Too soon to say. The first ten days or so of the month were mainly warm
and sunny, at least in the south, and this coming week doesn't look too
bad for southern districts. So I suspect that this July will come in
above average at least for the south, if not meeting the unrealistically
high expectations that many English seem to have about their climate (I
think the Scots and Welsh may be more realistic), Even with GW, we don't
have a Mediterranean climate and shouldn't think that prolonged heat and
sunshine is the norm.

Could be worth pursuing. June also has the advantage over July - and
more so over August which is still the main holiday month - of longer
hours of daylight. Moving the holiday season would require moving the
school terms forward. Doing that might mean that exams could be held
before the main hay fever season.
