I don't mind north-westerlies. Here in Surrey, they are usually not too
hot, not too wet, and have a reasonable amount of sunshine. Yes, maxima
will only be in the low twenties, but that's warm enough for me.

You are lucky John, I hate north westerlies in Summer, we've had our
dullest July by some distance and first 7 days of August have recorded
just 14 hours.
It's also been wet and some days last week felt quite chilly. I for one
will be happy to see the back of them!!

I never complain about relatively cool weather in summer, but the number
of cloudy nights has been exceptional - I can't remember the last night
that was completely, or even mostly clear...

Not sure about nights, but the number of days when it's been clear at
0900BST (before daytime cloud development should, in theory, get
going) has been very low since mid July. Today was less-than-half-
cloud-covered at that time (Southampton) but I can think of only a
couple of other days since July 18th when that's been the case. Even
in a changeable summer it's commonplace to be clear or mostly clear
early(ish) in the morning - it's not just been the weak fronts, the
spells in between the fronts have been unusually cloudy too. It will
be very interesting to see if anyone has any sunshine figures for the
month July 12th (when the cloudy spell seemed to begin) and August
11th (when maybe, if some of the models are to believed, it will end).
