Default North-westerlies here to stay.

Going by ECMWF & GFE, there just doesn't seem to be an end to this
pattern, I feel summer is waning now and the mid - August glimmer of
hope is fading fast. Very disappointing :-(

This pattern is becoming more consistent as each run passes.

Can you wave your magic wand Will, especially for the Lake District in
two weeks :-)

It's been like this all day on windward coasts in the far SW.

OK, the temperatures a tad below normal, 18-19C in most spots - 20C
on sheltered parts of the south coast, but in the sunshine it's been
'andsome.

NWesterlies are OK here, as long as the wind's not too strong. It
means good visibility & no sea fog. Typically there's far more cloud
just inland. Also, enough activity over the Atlantic to generate a bit
of swell.

Damned cold when the wind got up and the sun went in though! Was on
the coast near Chichester today and while it was pleasantly warm until
about 5pm, it was quite nasty after that unless you were dressed for
autumn.

The models do seem to agree on a high-pressure interlude in a week's
time though, and it looks like it will be nice in the southwest for
the foreseeable future.

There was a distinct smell of Autumn in the air when I walked home from
the train this evening. This may be related to the dewpoint being below
7C - the lowest we have had at this time of day (about 1730 BST) for
some time. The lack of scent from the Summer flowers (many now over or
past their best) which is accentuated by high humidity would be the other.

I don't mind north-westerlies. Here in Surrey, they are usually not too
hot, not too wet, and have a reasonable amount of sunshine. Yes, maxima
will only be in the low twenties, but that's warm enough for me.

You are lucky John, I hate north westerlies in Summer, we've had our dullest
July by some distance and first 7 days of August have recorded just 14
hours.
It's also been wet and some days last week felt quite chilly. I for one will
be happy to see the back of them!!

I never complain about relatively cool weather in summer, but the number
of cloudy nights has been exceptional - I can't remember the last night
that was completely, or even mostly clear...
