For anyone interested in historical weather charts covering the British Isles
and mainland Europe there's a veritable gold mine at

http://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/data_rescue_home.html

On the list of countries click on Germany and you'll then be presented with a
clickable list of files covering the period 1896-1975. These files are the
European Weather Report, prepared by Deutscher Wetterdienst and are the
equivalent of the UK Met Office Daily Weather Report. Many of the charts give a
lot of detail over the British Isles, including plotted observations. It's
quite addictive looking back over notable events of the past, such as the
winters of 1947 and 1963. A word of warning, though - the files are very large
so only suitable for a broadband connection.

Thanks for the link. I haven't investigated in detail yet, but I imagine
that the data over the UK will be a bit lacking between 1939 and 1945.

Yes, I've just had a look at some of the stuff for 1940 and there's no data
from the British Isles. There's quite good coverage for the rest of Europe,
though, probably better overall than the coverage that the Met Office had. It
would be interesting to compare these charts with the ones that the Met Office
produced.

What surprises me is that all this material, including the hand-tabulated
observations and the paragraphs of text, was still being produced during war
time. It's marvellous that it has survived but a bit sad that it has been made
available only through the auspices of NOAA in the USA.

Yes. I see that, not surprisingly, there was a gap from about April 1945
for just over a year.

Indeed. It's also sad that one can't see archived Met Office data being
made available any time soon.

It's a pity that the files have been made available only in PDF and TIFF
formats; I suspect that JPGs would have been a fraction of the size with
no noticeable loss in quality.
