.... Hurn almost certainly wrong. It is at least 2C above any its SYNOP
hourly data (20.6degC at 18Z), and as we had a maximum of 22.2degC in
a *highly* sheltered back garden (given yesterday's fitful sunshine we
would be roughly 2C warmer than Hurn at this time of year), I suggest
the *true* day (and 24hr) maximum for Hurn for the 11th was the 18Z
figure of 20.6degC.

That would fit my perceptions with the Brockenhurst area of the New
Forest, not a great distance away, yesterday, where I was outdoors
between approx 1700 and 2030 BST. It was cloudy to overcast and almost
certainly below 20C up to around 1900 BST. Then the sun appeared from
the clouds (clearing skies in the west) and shone until sunset, and
for about half an hour was high enough in the sky for it to feel
pleasantly warm, so I'd say in that area the temp briefly went above
20C from around 1900-1930BST , a similar time of day to the quoted
Hurn max. That said Hurn would have been in the sun longer (as the
clear sky moved from the west) so I guess a 22C max is not out of the
question.

.... If it had occurred mid-afternoon I'd tend to agree with you, but
the sunshine from the 18Z SYNOP (i.e. in the hour 1650-1750Z) was
0.2hr, having been 0.0hr for several hours previously. This is too
brief a period for the temperature to have responded so out of kilter
with other stations in the area: also, as noted above, our site, which
is highly sheltered, is much warmer than Hurn and had the same
sunshine profile (we're only a few miles away).

Only just noticed this discussion but If it helps, albeit from a bit
further away than where you are, the maximum here in Fareham and also
at Solent MRSC down the road was 20.4 deg C in both cases.

Spot on, Nick. Very briefly over +20C in Romsey on
Wednesday with a late max of +20.1C. Brockenhurst
lies 13 miles SSW of here.

Hurn 23.0°C as the highest maximum in SW England on Wednesday - which does
not prove it is correct of course !

.... you'll note that the maximum temperature has been suppressed by
the software tonight (12th) - presumably some sort of internal quality
check has kicked in:-
