Caught the tail-end of the Weather Show the other day and there was a piece
on "vapour trails". In it, they said that contrails were caused by jet aircraft and, specifically, jet engines. Do these ignoramuses think the Spitfire was jet-powered? It was also said that persistent trails were a sign of rain and that a lack of them meant the weather would be dry. From that I would gather that as persistent trails don't occur in unstable cold air, neither do showers.
