The KNMI-site reports very high sea water temps of the Mediterranean. This
conclusion is based on data recieved from NOAA-satellites. The average temps of the Med in june/july are about 20 - 22 C with regional max to 26 C. Now the temperature is about 4 C higher in general. According to the knmi these temps of the surface water could be reached by a lack of lows (wind and clouds) over the Med. Longer periods of quiet, sunny and hot weather would have caused these exceptional temps. Maps with seawater temps can be found at: http://www.knmi.nl/voorl/volimain.html The article compares the situation with that of 1995. The sea-temps of the "Thyreense" Sea, near Southern Italy reached a record of 28 - 30 C by the second half of August. Mm -- wonder about the temps of the Aegean by that time ;-) ?? Wijke |

Surely this must have an impact on the weather sooner or later, more storms,
and certainly a wet autumn. Also additional humidity, which 'we' may see some effects of in a Spainish plume situation. It's interesting to that the coolest waters in the Med are in the corner
between the Spanish Costa Brava and the Cote d'Azur in the South of France, I would imagine the traditional 'Mistral' is the cause of this, blowing the warmer surface waters south and upwelling the colder waters from below. The etesians had a similar effect over the northern and central Aegean in June, when SS temperatures would not exceed 22-23C. The lack of etesians since June is profound this year, too, like it was last year. SSTs are now between 24-25C (eastern, central, northern Aegean) and 27C (Ionian sea, eastern Dodecanese). Last August and autumn had some severe weather and wet records in schedule for Greece -SSTs had reached 28C. Yannis, SE Athens +24.7C, RH 43% |
