Highest half-hourly METAR at Southampton Airport (12 miles inland) was 14 (rounded). That 2.8 "Stevenson" difference is I think the highest I've ever seen in offshore wind conditions here. Makes you think. -- Dave Fareham (W) |

Met Office website 24-hour graph http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...er_graphs.html shows 18°C at 14.00 and 17°C at 13.00, 15.00 and 16.00. Colin Youngs Brussels |

Hurn, with essentially the same weather-type yesterday (Tuesday), managed 15.9°C, from total sunshine 8.5 hours; the sunshine was very strong for several hours, but enough breeze to stir things up at an open site to prevent local intense warming. I don't quote my own temperature readings because they are so out of kilter with a 'standard' site, but to give you an idea how a *heavily* sheltered site behaves, our maximum yesterday was 18, some 2degC above Hurn. Solent temperature is a 'real' temperature, but it is highly questionable how 'representative' it is of a broader area. Solent temperature is a 'real' temperature, but it is highly questionable how 'representative' it is of a broader area. And yet they have a mostly grass covered airfield within 50 metres of and adjacent to what I call their "domestic front garden" site. It would be failrly easy to site an AWS there and would I think be more representative. Running the cables (if needed) wouldn't be particularly expensive. Looks like they took the cheap option when Soton Weather Centre closed. Southampton airport puzzles me. Its METAR temperatures are invariably identical to my own 7 miles away (rounded to a degree) and yet my enclosure is always shaded from the sun, so no sunny wooden stevenson screen effect. I suspect that either their screen is similarly shaded by buildings, is a plastic screen, or that it is aspirated so in effect, like my own site, perhaps it is also unrepresentative in comparison to nearby sites using a standard screen. Southampton Oceanography Centre doesn't help much either, the instruments are on top of a rather high building! -- Dave Fareham (W) |
