Default winter tyres

Needs definition. See my post from last night, smooth large blocks
are not good, you want lots of sipes. I wonder if large smooth blocks
as found on "performance, go faster" type tyres is a contributary
factor in the bad handling on snow of sporty beamers?

... and some experience of driving in snow ...

Aye, nothing like experience, maybe after last winter a few might
have learnt a bit but I expect the vast majority will still be trying
to get a place in the World Wheel Spinning Championship.

(and a spade in the boot).

Prefer a proper shovel, the raised sides stop the stuff sliding off.
B-) Put mine in the car when I put the winter tyres on the other
day. Did see some plastic plate/gripper things for shoving under
wheels on the web the other day that might be useful but can't
remember where or their name.

A side-topic, I admit, but I saw lots of US comment damning the Toyota Prius
because "it won't let you spin the wheels". Very few people responded that
you shouldn't anyway! What the Prius does is to switch on the anti-slip so
fast that the car just creeps immensely slowly, but enough in my case to get
me out of my drive on to the (hopefully) gritted road. Once there (in the
Cotswolds), it's either OK or the hills are absolutely full of pillocks
sliding around so you can't get through even if you did have winter tyres.
But I'm still going to carry a pair of snow socks (like snow chains but
fabric and Kevlar) in case I ever get caught out and need to get home in a
new snowfall or sheet ice.

Decent tread and some experience of driving in snow will get
most
folks through the winter unless you live on a hill. Last year
up here
I spent many hours driving on snow, compact and loose. Good
tread is
very important, as is not having a BMW!

I have a BMW. I had enormous fun with it last February on the
hilly snow-covered back roads of Banffshire, with ordinary
tyres. We (The BMW and I) had a sort of ongoing difference of
opinion on where we were going next. I won, every time :-)

But then I can choose whether or not to go anywhere according to
the weather, and if I don't like the look of it I can just stay
at home. If I didn't have that choice, you can bet I'd have
winter treads.

I carry a spade, boiler suit, welly boots, socks, gloves and a
set of Autosocks in the boot all winter. Also a sleeping bag and
a thick travelling rug just in case I do lose the argument.

I like the way in which you describe your winter experience.
Though winter situations in The Netherlands may not be so severe as in
Northern Scotland, as a 'preservatieve' I use winter tires from October to
April. I am an old bloke from the vintage year 1925, so you probably will
forgive my winter fears.

Sytze
