An exciting night down here. Started 11:00 with a thunderstorm, very
large hail then very heavy snow. Then frequent hail/sleet/snow pellet & snow showers. Looking out the window at around 2:30 there was a complete cover of snow with no grass sticking through. The snow covered the roof thick enough to completely fill & hide the guttering. Ceratinly at least 3-4cm of lying snow. Some sleet/rain later in the night means there is now 1-2c,m of icy snow - still a complete cover. Easily my earliest on record. All this happening whilst the media watched a dry Halden Hill. Graham Penzance where at last the dangler is breaking up. |

Overnight rainfall equivalent 14.5mm Total for the 72 hours to 09:00 today 46.6mm (This may well be understated as a fair bit dropped as hail) Previous earliest snow cover at 09:00 15/12/97 Yesterdays max in the temporary incusion of milder air 7.5C Last nights' Min 0.3 Current Temp - 0900 1.1 It's also worth noting that from October to February if you take the average rainfall per day per wind direction, N is wetter than SW here. Not what the text books say for western counties. Graham Penzance |

Paul Church, near Mousehole, was struck by lightning during last nights thunder snow. Also some power cuts. No salt on the roads in Penzance, probably as the forecast said the snow would be over high ground in Devon eastwards, not down to sea level in west Cornwall. To have 2 snowfalls here in November is almost unheard of. You get some lovely lighting effects over the sea when the air is so much colder than the sea temperature.
