uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default PWS can't even be bothered to get their facts right...

Correct me if I'm wrong but the following statement is false?

Jonathan Powell, senior forecaster with Positive Weather Solutions,
said: "The Scottish record of -23C in 1919 will tumble before the year
is out."

The actual record as far as I know is minus 27.2 °C (-17.0 °F)
1995-12-30[23] recorded at Braemar (1895-02-11 and 1982-01-10 ) and
Altnaharra (1995-12-30)

The assertion that -23C is the Scottish record is certainly
erroneous. I remember reading the reports about -27.2 in both
Braemar and Altnaharra.

.... The -27.2°C is certainly the published (standard site, accepted
exposure/instruments etc., etc.) that I have for the dates as listed
above, though the 1895 entry is I believe not accepted by everyone -
don't know the background to this though.

Goodness knows how the -23 fits in: if you look at the list of lowest
values per month per year, or the list of lowest for Scotland for the
winter-half months, this figure was broken since that year. Certainly
in 1919, the lowest for *that year* was -23 on 14th November (a
remarkable early date perhaps for the lowest for the year) at Braemar.

This might be a useful link:- click on the appropriate region and you
get the climatology, though I suspect that it won't include the 1895
figure as indicated above ...

Yep, and even if the December record was what was meant, the Altnaharra
figure would still apply.
