Default Northampton misses it all

Little bit of snow earlier in the day, but the grass is still visible. Less
than 1cm, and that's the optimistic side of the measurement. Further south
though was a different story. During the afternoon the M1 was virtually
stationary in both directions from Staples Corner (J1) to Northampton (J15).
One policeman said it was the longest queue he had ever experienced on that
motorway.

Didn't get above freezing here all day, -1.0C at best, and the postman
delivered the second letter from the Pension Service informing me of another
cold weather payment being made. Yippee!

When I saw this on Teletext earlier, I thought it was a misprint, but it was
confirmed on the local news at tea time. Buxton in Norfolk reached -17.2C
last night, probably the coldest ever in the county. I recorded -5.7C. That
seems one hell of a temperature gradient to me, 11.5 degrees in 100 miles.
See

Currently -5.2C here, and sinking. No snow since 5pm. And the road outside
is like a skating rink.

Hi Jim here on the other side of town near to Junc 15 of the M1 there
was appreciably more snow. We have 5 cm lying this morning. New low
temp recorded here overnight of -14.1C.
Using a 12am to 12am measure I have now recorded 26 consecutive days
with a temp below 0C, as a comparison last winter saw a 9 day sequence
where the temp fell below 0C.
Still trying to weigh up whether to go to St Albans this morning.

Fair amount of snow here but the major routes should be passable as long as
no obstuctions form due to accidents or broken down vehicles. there is
around 15 to 18cm of level snow on th fields.

Thanks for the report Alan

I have decided against it, St Albans always receives greater snow
accumulations than Northampton ( i am from St A originally)
Not sure if its a coincidence or where other factors come in to play.

Cheers Sean

Locally St Albans seems to miss out on snow compared with surrounding areas
which I think is due to the fact we are in a vale and surrounded on all
sides by higher ground. To the north there is the Chilterns, to the south
there is an escarpment formed by London Clay and underlying assorted beds
such as the Reading beds which rise to around 130m compared to the Ver
valley which is at 65 to 70m. The ground is higher in Chiswell Green as
there are substantial deposits of river gravels associated with the River
Thames which used to flow through the area before it was forced south by
the ice sheets.

If anyone is interested there is an excellent new book on Hertfordshire
geology, see the Herts natural History society pages for details.

If it's in a frost hollow, you could get that difference over a mile or
two, never mind a hundred.
