Default [OT] Cool, changeable central Europe

Just returned back from about a week and a half in Austria and Germany
and probably at just the right time judging by the reports on here
lol.

However, that said, the weather out there, particularly from Tuesday
night to Sunday was little better than what it appeared to have been
like in the UK. On the days I was out of the UK (13th-24th) it rained,
albeit in small amounts sometimes, on all but two days and only three
could be described as warm and sunny.

Anyway, the detail: coolish but not too bad Sc-dominated weather on
the 13th in London deteriorated to dull, damp drizzly cyclonic N
winds in Cologne on that night, due to a small low over the area.
Travelling E to Vienna the following day saw the clouds break to 4/8
Sc conditions, but then, I would guess, I travelled through a cold
front as said conditions gave way to hazy, showery and rather gloomy
conditions into Austria. Nothing too unusual for a continental climate
I guess but what was surprising was how relatively cool it was - if
humid.

On the 15th the same conditions were present in the morning in Vienna,
but then the aforementioned cold front must have gone through as there
were a couple of heavy showers midday followed by much clearer and
fresher conditions. The 16th and 17th were the best days of the trip -
sunny and increasingly hot, though after dark on the 17th it became
extremely windy, almost gale force. It clouded over that night and
travelling W to the Salzburg area on the 18th appeared to mark another
cold front, with drizzly rain and overcast giving way to classic Pm
conditions later in the with heavy showers in the mountains.

Tues 19th was the other good day, though cloudy in the evening and
rain by midnight. The weather then completely broke down with rain all
day the 20th, and a mixture of low cloud/drizzle with occasional
bright spells and heavy showers the next couple of days. It was cool
with temps in the high teens at around 500m. Said weather rather
wrecked my plans for some Alpine walking...

More heavy showers on Saturday just gone. Yesterday I left the
Salzburg area to very heavy showers and cool temperatures, and it
seems like the whole of Germany was under cool, wet conditions too.
Things only improved as I crossed the Belgian border to a sunny
Brussels, then a mix of cloud and clear conditions for the journey
back to London.

So it looks like the recent bad weather here has transferred east. To
have so many "Atlantic" type days so far inland in Europe must be
decidedly unusual.

Nick
