Hi, All,
The North Sea influence has really set in now. Currently 124.3hr sun this July. Will we beat last year's dismal 126.5hr? CEP Brooks in his book, The English Climate (I think that is the title, but not the Lamb version), describes the cloudy, humid Durham summer well. I wish I had my copy still. Has anyone got one or can point me to one, or even the correct title? Even better, any chance of a quick resume of the Durham climate paragraph? I would be really appreciative. It begins, "Climatically, Durham shows its proximity to Scotland....." Anyway, this is the least sunny month here since February! March 164.4hr April 229.7hr May 197.1hr June 177.5hr July 124.3hr so far, dull week in prospect. Current 1020Z, Wind NE 1KT(F1), vis 10 miles, overcast, temp 14C dew 11C, 1022mb steady. 09Z-09Z 27th July 2011 Copley Lead Mill 218m Max 16.1C min 11.2C Copley Met O 253m Max 15.5C min 10.7C grass 10.7C rain 0.1mm, sun 26th 0.0hr July 2011 so far, Met O site 17.7C / 9.0C / 13.3C(-1.0C) Rain 79.5mm(133%) Sun 124.3hr(71%) Wind NNW 5.8KT(-0.9KT) Lead Mill 18.2C / 7.9C / 13.1C Ken Copley, nr Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham http://copley.website.orange.co.uk http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/D5933?lang=en http://www.wunderground.com/weathers....asp?ID=MD5933 http://www.farsondigital.co.uk/barnard_castle/live.php |

I have the 1954 edition and I'll try to find what you're wanting but it may take a while as the index is somewhat limited; Durham doesn't get a mention - Daily weather map, Depressions, Dog days, and Droughts are the only entries under "D". -- Graham Davis, Bracknell Whilst it's true that money can't buy you happiness, at least you can be miserable in comfort. Hi, Graham and Dave, Thanks for the replies. Graham, now you have me thinking, have I got the right book and author!! Bilham's "The Climate of the British Isles" is now ringing a bell. Sorry to be so vague - it's a long time ago since I read it. Ken |

Ken Your website ("orange") shows mean sunshine at Copley as 1480 hrs. Not too bad for that latitude surely - and better than Durham's 1375 hrs (1971-2000). But your July total is looking pretty lousy. |

But your July total is looking pretty lousy. Hi, Rupert, Annual sunshine total is good here for altitude and latitude. The Durham recorder is not too well exposed imho and anyway is shrouded in lowland mist and North Sea stratus more than we are. We are also often above the winter inversions. Our dullest season, percentage of possible-wise, is summer unfortunately. The other seasons are good. We do especially well with airflows from south-west clockwise to north west because of the shelter of the high Pennines and Lake District fells. Best wishes, Ken |
