Default East's turn today

Looks as though the cloud that cleared yesterday afternoon is staying
away and another lovely day in prospect. Not too hot yet but may get a
bit too humid as time progresses, I guess.

21.0C here at Haytor Dave and very humid with a 15-17C dewpoint. Did a 14
mile recce walk today for leading in October. Waist high in bracken for a
mile was great fun! Boy was it sweaty though. Luckily I found a pub at 1400
feet (Warren House Inn) where I could quench my thirst :-) Luckily too that
it was mainly cloudy, if that sun had come out it would have been baking.
Got home and just relaxed in the garden in the high humidity and cloud. Very
little wind, no midges and marvellous. Too hot for tee-shirt and shorts
today, but decency prevailed (even in my own garden where I have been known
to strip off). Runner beans have grown 2 foot this weekend and growth
elsewhere is lush, what a gorgeous summer we are having on Dartmoor!

Temperatures around or slightly above the average here today with a max
of 23.2°C, though it was a little cool down on the beach when it clouded
over this afternoon, necessitating an early exit.

Still, the sea temperatures are not bad now (over 18°C today), warmer
near the shore, so swimming is starting to become reasonably pleasurable.

I would say that this summer so far has been disappointing. Even a
stunning August isn't going to save it.

As for lush growth, the severe drought continues here in the lowlands of
south east Devon. Grass now browning nicely and had given up growing
ages ago. Most of the wildflowers in the Devon bank have set seed early
and I would now think the fire risk is high. Allotment is a right-off.

A cloudy and slightly cool(ish) evening.

(20:00), 18.8°C, RH 76%, DP 14.4°C, 1013 hPa, Wind 9 mph SE.

Don't you have watering facilities?

Nick I have not paid enough attention to your postings: in a nutshell,
how severe has been the drought your way. I am not too far east of
you.
Growth is very good here ( and two Clematis that I got from the Ottery
nursery three years ago have developed a minimum of 120 flowers each-
a massive spread!)

July rainfall total was 23.0 mm which is about 56% of my eLTA. But that
doesn't tell the whole story. Rain fell on 10 days, so that says that
most of it was light. In fact, the majority of that 23 mm was drizzle
and this failed to wet the soil in any way. As soon as the sun came out,
whatever got wetted dried out quickly in the strong sun.

It's as if that 23 mm had never occurred for all the good it did!

Only 1.4 mm has fallen since the 20th July.

There is a tap next to my allotment but hosepipes are not allowed.
Trying to keep everything watered with a watering can means hour-long
visits each evening. I haven't had the time for that.

11mm in Dawlish since July 9th. Water butts have been empty nearly all
summer and The Lawn, in the cerntre of Dawlish, has hardly a blade of
green grass on it. It is drought conditions here. After a very dry
spring, summer has been similarly dry. Veg has been hand watered and
we are getting some stunning crops in the first year of growing. The
spuds, brocolli, cabbage onions and green beans have been especially
good. Strawberries have been disappointing and the jury is out on the
outdoor tomatoes!

The pub? I thought smoking was banned in them nowadays?
