This July has been the coolest in Spain since 2002, with an average
temperature of 23.3C over the country as a whole, 0.1C below the 1971-2000 average. Overall rainfall at 18mm was below the long-term average of 23mm. However, these figures hide wide regional variations. Parts of NW Spain were between 1 and 2 degs below 'normal', while parts of the SE had an anomaly of more than +2 degs with Murcia-San Javier recording a new July record average of 27.0C. Unlike recent years, no really extreme temperatures were recorded, with the highest being 40.6C on the 6th at Murcia-Alcantarilla. Rainfall also showed a marked regional character, with the northern coast and the coast of Catalonia being wetter than usual (with some parts exceeding 300% of normal), while large parts of the centre and SW received less than 25% of normal rainfall (with almost no rain at all in many parts). Girona airport (Costa Brava) had 106.7mm on the 26th, doubling its previous July record rainfall for a single day. That suggests that July in Spain has been a lot warmer over the last ten years than hitherto. -- John Hall "Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened." Global warming (whatever its cause) has meant that temperatures since 2000 have tended to exceed previous average levels. The previous three July figures (anomaly with respect to the 1971-2000 average) we 2010 +1.8 2009 +1.1 2008 +0.2 I don't have access to all previous years figures, but July 2007 was "slightly above average", 2006 had an anomaly of +2.6 and both 2003 and 2005 were certainly warmer than 2009. |
