.... just to confirm sferics ... a couple of 'mid-level' rumbles; first
one around 09Z was distant and muffled, second around 0913Z had an initial 'crack' then drifted away to a rumble in the distance. Rain since ~02Z, moderate bursts since 05Z, moderate, isolated heavy, since 0730Z ... total rainfall 9 mm. (1050Z): just come back from the shops / drowned rat comes to mind .... 34 mm since early hours, with the bulk of that coming since 0730Z: local traffic reports suggest many roads flooded and the local roads here are having trouble getting rid of water - not helped by tree debris blocking the drains! (1215Z): PPN now light, with sky brightening up from SW/W, but until 1150Z, extended periods heavy rain, amongst continuous moderate PPN which had set in around 0730Z. Thunder was infrequent much of the time (roughly 30 min intervals), but 1125-1145Z, discharges (still CC/IC .. only vague lightning visible within cloud on occasion) were coming roughly every 2 to 5 mins. Total rainfall (5" gauge BUT *non-standard* exposure) 0900-1200 (3hr) = 44.8 mm Total rainfall whole event (so far/i.e. since about 0200Z) = 50.8 mm This will easily be our highest 24hr (standard and 'any-period') total since we moved here in summer 2007. Lots of local news reports of problems in Poole and Bournemouth. Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |

Sure enough, Romsey has followed suit with flooding issues and I shall now investigate the local area in more detail... on foot and wearing wellies! An extra layer might also be in order having glanced at the temperature... 13C. We're not finished with the rain, as yet another heavy burst has begun (1330Z). Nigel |

.... rain total in the 'rain-day' 18th August = 47.4 mm, and in the
'standard' day 00-24 = 53.4mm Hurn packed up unfortunately, but interpolating between us and the two Springbourne figures would suggest that they should have been in the 'upper 50s' mm for the standard day. Dense fog for a short time early on, but a lovely day in prospect now. Martin. -- Martin Rowley West Moors, East Dorset (UK): 17m (56ft) amsl Lat: 50.82N Long: 01.88W NGR: SU 082 023 |

I went to Bournemouth in the afternoon where at 1400 the dramatic flooding ( well not really) had dropped a lot. The morning in Blandford had some rumbles of thunder and I think higher totals than I got at Hilton. R Hilton |

Martin. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just been looking at the reports on this storm. Pretty frightening. Noticed that part of Magna Road was blowing drain covers. That's where I lived back in the 70's. jim, Northampton |

As my job has moved to the other side of Southampton, I missed all the
"fun". Total rain today since midnight: 55.6mm or roughly 2.2 inches, of which 34mm fell in the hour between 10am and 11am. To put it in context, twice as much rain fell today as in the whole of March and April combined (26.2mm) The average rainfall for August in Bournemouth is roughly 35mm, so we had a month's rainfall in that one hour. What is also notable is that it has been exceptionally cool today. Temperatures have hovered around the 13c mark all day and even dipped below the 12c mark for a time during the late morning. I cannot find an August day which has been so cool by day in my records going back to 1996.
