Because that's how you accurately identify trends. Remember that climate is 'average weather' - temperatures and ice cover go up and down because the climate system has cycles and stochastic variability, but if the climate is stable then *average* temperature and *average* ice cover will vary little over long periods. Global warming and climate change are identifiable in significant changes to these averages. Without the detail it's not possible to see the big picture, i.e. to identify trends. |
