Default met office hints of colder weather setting in late jan / early feb

about time winter turned up!

UK Outlook for Wednesday 25 Jan 2012 to Wednesday 8 Feb 2012:

Temperatures are expected initially to be around normal for the time of
year, although there is a risk of colder conditions setting in as we
head into February. The most settled conditions are likely across the
southern areas of the UK at first, whilst northern areas will probably
be more unsettled. However, the generally unsettled weather will
probably spread southwards to affect other areas at times. Amounts of
sunshine should be close to normal for the time of year with perhaps
eastern parts of the UK seeing the best of the sunshine.

"A risk of colder conditions." What a wonderfully meaningless phrase
that is. There is a risk that, when I go to get my paper tomorrow
morning, I will be hit by a meteorite. There is also a risk that not all
of my six lottery numbers will be drawn tomorrow evening.

There's no chance of that. The next meteorite is not due until 16th
Jan!

"THE DECAY OF PHOBOS-GRUNT (UPDATED): Russia's malfunctioning Mars
probe, Phobos-Grunt, is sinking back into Earth's atmosphere. Taking
into account the current space weather forecast and the area-to-mass
ratio of the spacecraft.

Ted Molczan estimates the time of re-entry: Jan 16 @ 18:00 UTC +/- 1.2
days. The window of uncertainty is still too large to pinpoint exactly
where the fireball will occur:

"The exact hour of decay will be known with certainty only a few hours
before the fact,"

Check Spaceweather's Satellite Tracker for last-chance sighting
opportunities."

Sounds a lot more certain than the Chief Meteorologist at Exitdoor.
