What a sad loss to his family and certainly this group,we will miss his

I know Paul used to post on here for many years, so many will be sad to hear he passed away last night :-( It was announced on his website today:- http://www.rutnet.co.uk/pp/gold/viewgold.asp?id=7 This is all so sad, if not unexpected as he has not been well recently. Paul and I go back a long way. I remember in the late 90s and early 2000s the phone calls wehad, discussing teh five day outlooks. He was a great snow enthusiast and loved his sledging. A damn good long range forecaster as well, one of the very best. He had his own statistical methods and would rarely go out on a limb. Whenever I got depressed with a mild outlook, he used to say "chin up Will" it ain't that bad. rememebr teh WMO snowman thread, paul was brilliant with that and in those days we always got a good repartee going. Rememeber the forecasting competition he and I had, he always used to do better than me and then there was the offer of pints in the local etc etc. oh dear tears are welling up, must stop. rest in peace my friend. Funnily enough I looked at his page last night and saw this forecast, which I now believe was his last. I spoke to him a couple of times regarding ICS synop - a program for plotting weather maps from shortwave transmissions, and both came to the conclusion that it has seen its day due to the interference on short wave, along with the arrival of the internet. He was good fun too as Will has pointed out with the snowman thread, as he told me off for not complying with WMO dimensions for the snowman's body etc! Rest in peace and my condolences to his family. Phil ISSUED SUNDAY EVENING. Spoke to Paul on a couple of occasions over Christmas in the days of no internet at home in the late 90s, always full of wisdom. He leaves not only a legacy of this newsgroup but a whopping great high pressure after him, and I think on the day of his passing that its location wasn't far off: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/archive...ka20120123.gif Richard |

I recall that his winter forecasts were eagerly awaited every November. They usually weren't what cold weather fans wanted to hear, but they were usually right!
