Can't vouch for its authenticity but I'm told this was taken from the oil
tanker pictured several days ago :- http://www.metbrief.com/Isabell.jpg

Looks like a nasty line-squall rather than anything to do with a
hurricane. There's no cirrus shield and no swell on the sea.

I was pondering the cirrus too Norman and agree.

Furthermore how close would a tanker wish to get to a hurricane, presumably
not very close. In saying that I'm reminded of the QE2's encounter with
hurricane Luis in 1995 which caused a bit of a stir at the time on the now
defunct Metroute bench. http://www.qe2.org.uk/luis.html

Hi Jon

This photo was posted to the alt.binaries.pictures.weather NG a couple of
weeks ago and can't be that of Isabell. One heck of a photo though.

That sea surface has not experienced any wind above force 4.

Ahaa, well I did have my doubts, thanks Jimmy. It's a cracker as you say
and certainly one I'll be tucking away in the archive.

Cheers,
Jon.

The decks of an oil tanker are a maze of pipes and valves. That ship has
none but does have lots of hatches indicating that she is a bulk carrier.
Not that that detracts in any way from the photograph - pretty amazing!

I have to agree with others in this NG by saying that in my opinion, it is
not a genuine photo of Isabel.

However,
credit where credit is due, it is an amazing image even if it has been
manipulated.
It is now my "desktop wallpaper" and will remain so for a week or so.
