Tideswell, Derbyshire - Wednesday 4 April 2012
----------------------------------------------------- 0530z NNE F6-7 0250 SN BLSN VV/// +00.3/+00.3 1006 RMK: A real nasty one this morning. By far the heaviest snowfall of the winter. 15cm lying snow with drifts deeper than 1m around the house and undoubtedly much deeper outside the village. Pity the poor sheep farmers. The fields around the village are full of very young lambs at the moment. They'll really struggle this morning. As I type this at 0550z the snow has increased to heavy and the vis is down to about 150m. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

We have had deeper snow accumulation in the 4 winters that we have been here but this is the most severe individual event that we have had, by quite a margin. 09-09z: Tx 7.8 (1055z) Tn +0.3 (0510z) RR 25.0 mm 18-09z: Tg -2.9 00-24z: Sun 0.0 The rainfall is an estimate based on liquid water in the raingauge and melted snow from a representative location. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

Hi, Norman, Greatest fall of our winter as well with 09Z ob 21cm at the Met O site and 22cm at the Lead Mill. This betters the 17cm we had in February. It is the greatest 09Z April depth since 23cm during the infamous late April storm of 1981 when the greatest 09Z depth at my Met. O. at nearby Low Etherley site was 23cm on 24th with a maximum measured depth of 28cm at the 21Z ob. Ken Copley, Teesdale |

Still moderate snow at 1030z though the wind has eased a bit. The temp crept up to +0.6 about 45 minutes ago but it's dropped back to +0.4 since then. We've had a couple of short power outages this morning but only lasting a few minutes. I doubt if we'll see the postman today. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

Moderate snow continued till about 1330z, making it around 18 hours of continuous snow, mostly moderate but heavy at times this morning. With a fresh to strong NNE wind blowing for much of the day it was pretty grim. Since 1330z there's been slight sleet and snow and a steady thaw has set in. Max temp was 2.1. We had a snow plough along our lane at about 1400z so we were able to get out for a bit of a walk after that. There's been a lot of drifting and any lanes that haven't had the attention of the snow plough are blocked by deep drifts. My best estimate of the level depth is about 13cm. It has reduced quite a bit, partly by compaction and partly by melting. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. |

Some light snow swirling around earlier this morning but never showed any sign of settling. I can see the snow on the western slopes of the Pennines but even on Winter Hill, there only appeared to be a dusting at the top. It was the wind that was notable today. Strong winds from the NE are unusual here and it was strange too see the trees being blown 'the wrong way'. And what a horrible, unpleasant wind it was too. Max temp 5.2C. It might as well have been January. -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl |
