Default Heat-related deaths in Gran Canaria

The African air mass, which I reported last week has brought heatwave conditions to
most of mainland Spain, spead to the Canary Islands over the weekend.

Two elderly British tourists have died of heat exhaustion and two others have been
hospitalised after hiking in the interior of Gran Canaria in temperatures approaching
41C. I don't know if they were aware of the warnings in force in the area, and I mean
no disrespect, but sadly I can't help thinking of the old song about mad dogs and
Englishmen. Such an avoidable tragedy.

Hi Gavino,

I can certainly vouch for the fact that the heat has arrived in
Southern Spain. After an indifferent and often wet Spring, we have
now flipped in to summer. I note that Rota (near Cádiz) reached 39c
today (a new May record) and Jerez 38c...the usual suspects of Seville
& Córdoba both made 37c. Nearby Moron de la Frontera reached 38c.

Here in Gibraltar, it's only been a modest 24c in comparison although
the DP's of up to 17c have made it feel quite sticky in the light
winds......

Steve.
